چکیده

Ethyl carbamate and a series of related compounds were given in single intraperitoneal doses to pregnant Syrian hamsters on Day 8 of gestation, and fetuses were examined for malformations on Day 13 of gestation. Urethan produced a variety of malforma tions and growth retardation. Of the compounds modified in the carboethoxy end, n-propyl carbamate was as teratogenic as the ethyl carbamate, and /3-hydroxyethyl carbamate had only bor derline effect, while allyl carbamate and n-butyl carbamate were completely negative. Four compounds modified in the cabamyl portion of the molecule were tested. Three of these, ethyl Nmethylcarbamate, ethyl .V-hydroxycarbamate, and diethylcarbonate, were teratogenic; a fourth, ethyl A',Ar-dimethyIcarbamate was not teratogenic. The ethyl A*-hydroxycarbamate

Effects of ethyl carbamate (urethan) and related compounds on early developmental processes of the leopard frog, Rana pipiens.

Urethan (ethyl carbamate) has been used as a laboratory anesthetic for many years, but only within the past decade have its carcinogenic (9) and carcinoclastic (8) properties been demon strated. The present investigation was under taken to further elucidate the mode of action of the urethan molecule by a comparison of its ef fects with those of closely related compounds us ing the early develop...

Comparative risk assessment of carcinogens in alcoholic beverages using the margin of exposure approach.

Alcoholic beverages have been classified as carcinogenic to humans. As alcoholic beverages are multicomponent mixtures containing several carcinogenic compounds, a quantitative approach is necessary to compare the risks. Fifteen known and suspected human carcinogens (acetaldehyde, acrylamide, aflatoxins, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethanol, ethyl carbamate, formaldehyde, furan, lead, 4-methylimi...

Carcinogenic effects of acrylamide in Sencar and A/J mice.

Acrylamide structurally resembles vinyl carbamate, a proposed proximate carcinogenic form of ethyl carbamate. To test the hypothesis that acrylamide should possess carcinogenic properties, it was tested in the Salmonella-microsome assay for point mutation, as a skin tumor initiator in the Sencar mouse, and for its ability to induce lung adenomas in the A/J mouse. Acrylamide was found to be with...

The Mutagenicity of Some Carcinogenic Compounds for Escherichia Coli.

F the many substances that have been found to be mutagenic several are 0 also carcinogenic and considerable evidence has been accumulating to indicate a relationship between these two properties. Nitrogen and sulfur mustards were shown by AUERBACH and ROBSON (1944) to be mutagenic for Drosophila, a finding which has been confirmed by DEMEREC (1947a,b), BURDETTE (1952) and others. Nitrogen musta...
